Really it's a combo of a few things; part of it is that since my fics as a rule tend to be one-shots they are written in the present tense for the most part. I don't prefer my writing in the past tense, even though it's the most acceptable way of writing fanfic. But with this, I kinda wanted it to almost feel uncomfortable and maybe... jumbly, because really Brian isn't sure how this is gonna be taken. He could get blown off or laughed at if Justin doesn't see the gesture for what it is, or Justin could make this huge over dramatic teary thing out of it.
Hmm, that was a bit pretentious, huh? Can we go with this: I don't know past tense from present? ; )

And if you like to use the present tense, well, we can just call you Zen-like and say that you enjoy living in the eternal now. Or something like that, anyway.
